Are you sick of your body being weaker than you want, flabbier than you want, older than you want? Are you sort of exhausted even just thinking about your body?

I have news for you that can really help shift that whole dynamic: your body is exhausted with you too.

Actually, it’s exhausted with how you talk to it and how you talk about it. It’s exhausted with the energy you come at it with. It’s exhausted with how for years you’ve criticized it. How it’s never enough. How it’s definitely not okay as it is.

You’re treating your body like your enemy, and that’s a problem. It’s exhausting and frustrating for your body and you.

And then there’s the way you talk to your body and talk about your body. Your body feels this and reacts to it. Your body reacts to the way you hate on it by wanting to hide and curl up in a ball and stay very still.

It reacts to your wishing it were different by craving carbs or fats, which it knows will help it make chemicals like dopamine and serotonin, so it can feel a little good for a little while.

Basically, the way you talk to your body makes your body do the opposite of what you probably want it to do – move and eat nutritious foods.

And then you get even more frustrated with your body. It’s a vicious circle.

So what to do?

So what to do?  Buckle in, because I’m pretty sure you’re not going to like this.

First, accept.

Start with unconditional acceptance of your body. Then and only then can you move on to what you want: a shake-up, true change.

Good relationships are based on unconditional love and acceptance. You probably know this about person-to-person relationships. It’s true for your person-to-body relationship too.

What if you treated your body like it was a close friend? I bet you’re pretty kind to your friends.

What if you talked to your body the way you’d talk to a close friend? The thing is, there’s been some rough times between you and your body. There’s been rejection, resentment, acting out. So it’s going to take more than one or two days of acceptance to achieve trust between you, to reach the place where change can happen.

It’s going to take you every morning embracing your body, how it looks and feels right now. You every night telling your body it did a good job today. You thanking your body for walking, seeing, digesting, forging on without enough sleep, carrying you through every second of your life no matter what.

As you love your body, it changes the atmosphere between the two of you. It changes the very way you feel. It changes… everything.

By the way…

I want you to know I come by this knowledge honestly.

You may look at my pictures and think it’s easy for me to love my body. It’s NOT. I’ve dealt with more than one chronic pain condition in my life, and many days my body does not feel great. So if you’re thinking “easy for you to say”…it’s not. Some days I cry.

What do I do?

I come back to acceptance. I tell my body, “Thanks for how you tried today. I appreciate you. Please tell me what you need so we don’t have to stay in this pain.”

It took me years and years to learn this. I hope you learn it today.
