If you’re a perfectionist, you’re awesome. You strive for excellence, and you almost always achieve it. You’ve probably got a job that sounds prestigious. You’re the person everyone wants on their committee. Your family looks to you for support and guidance. And you almost definitely graduated summa cum laude, didn’t you?
Great. But I have a vital question you need to ask yourself: At what cost?
How do you pay for all that excellence? Do you pay for it with anxiety, insomnia, self-judgment, self-doubt, or depression? Do you motivate yourself by pushing, pressuring, and scaring yourself?
Are you constantly afraid that if you slow down, everything will fall apart?
If so, you’re paying a price that’s far too high, and here’s the thing: you set up this economy yourself. Or maybe it was your parents or your religious or academic institution that taught you perfectionism, taught you that you needed to exchange your peace of mind for achieving — but somewhere along the way, you agreed to the system. And you keep agreeing to it. You keep paying those prices.
If you’re longing to change how you “pay” for your excellence, I see you. I was in the exact same place about seven years ago, until I finally saw how much my perfectionism was actually costing me. I was paying with my peace of mind, with my self-esteem, and with my ability to fully enjoy life.
So I got out of that marketplace.
I know what you’re probably thinking right now: “I need to maintain my level of excellence. People depend on me.”
And you can. But you don’t have to pay these prices. You don’t have to exchange your peace for perfection.
Four deep-rooted principles are keeping your perfectionism in place. And once you uncover them, you can change them.
You can achieve excellence without sacrificing yourself. Once you understand why your perfectionism exists and what’s fueling it, your life will change.
